Viola striker quashes Lyon link

Alberto Gilardino has strenuously denied suggestions he could be heading to Lyon this summer. The Italy international insists he is happy at current employers Fiorentina and has no desire to move on. The 26-year-old striker made a switch to Viola from AC Milan in May 2008 and has enjoyed a productive first season in Florence. "I like France very much, but I am not going to play for Lyon or anyone else in France," Gilardino told La Repubblica. "I've started a project in Florence and I want to stay with this team." Fiorentina sporting director Pantaleo Corvino has also moved to dismiss any talk of Gilardino being sold in the near future.

Important

"I don't like to comment on rumours," he told Sky. "But I am sure that there is no chance of Gilardino joining Lyon. "He has been hugely important to us and we are not going to sell him to anyone." While Fiorentina are determined to retain the services of Gilardino, Corvino is not so confident regarding Adrian Mutu's future. "I am not sure what will happen with Mutu," he said on the talismanic Romanian frontman. "I have my opinion about this player, but I don't know if he wants to continue playing at Artemio Franchi Stadium."
