Paris St Germain opted against a move for full-back Gabriel Heinze as they did not want to hinder the development of Mamadou Sakho.
The Argentina international looks poised to join Marseille from Real Madrid after all parties reached an 'agreement in principle' over the switch.
Heinze spent three years at the Parc des Princes from 2001-04 before spells with Manchester United and then Real.
PSG coach Antoine Kombouare insists they could have afforded to bring the 31-year-old back to the club, but did not want to hinder the progress of young talent Sakho.
"It was especially complicated for the young Mamadou Sakho, who like Heinze is a left-footer," Kombouare told the club's
official website.
"We wanted to keep Sakho and to continue to play him despite the respect and admiration I have for Heinze."
Better season
Departing president Sebastien Bazin declared that finishing in the Champions League positions is PSG's objective for this season.
"We will have reached our goals once PSG are in the Champions League every year," said Bazin.
"PSG have one of the five biggest budgets in Ligue 1 and that must allow it to have a better season than the last one."
Bazin announced he would be succeeded as president at the end of August by Robin Leproux.
Leproux, who currently acts as the advisor to Bazin, is to be confirmed in the new role following a general meeting of the board next month.
"He is from now on the club's main man," Bazin said of Leproux.
