The Bulgarian forward completed a deadline day switch to the south of France from Fulham.
The initial loan agreement will keep him in Monaco until the end of the season.
The Ligue 1 title hopefuls made their move after seeing star striker Falcao ruled out for the remainder of the campaign with knee ligament damage.
Berbatov will help to fill that attacking avoid, but claims he is not looking to provide direct cover as his game is markedly different to that of his Colombian colleague.
Instead, the 33-year-old claims to have been lured to Monaco by the ambition of their owners and the opportunity to open a new chapter in his distinguished career.
Berbatov told Le 10 Sport: "I was looking for something new. When Monaco contacted me, the decision was easy.
"I'm not here to replace anyone, I have to help the team win with my passing and my goals.
"I can play point or behind a striker, but I'm mostly in the service of the collective so that the team wins.
"I have a few more years in me since my time at Manchester United, but I feel good and ready to give the best of myself."
