Marseille finally gave their fans something to cheer about as they put previously-unbeaten Troyes to the sword 6-0 to give new coach Michel a debut to remember.
Marseille finished fourth in Ligue 1 last season but lost a host of key players over the summer and then started the new campaign with back-to-back defeats to Caen and Reims - sides that finished in the bottom eight last term.
Marseille failed to score in either of those matches, the first of which resulted in the shock resignation of manager Marcelo Bielsa at full-time, but they more than made up for that on Sunday to give Michel the ideal start.
Abdelaziz Barrada's 19th-minute strike was all that separated the teams at the break, but the floodgates opened in the second half with Lassana Diarra, Michy Batshuayi, Lucas Ocampos and Romain Alessandrini all getting on the scoresheet.
The victory lifts Marseille out of the bottom three and into mid-table, a point behind Saint-Etienne who also recorded their first win of the season earlier in the day after beating 10-man Lorient 1-0.
Hosts Lorient lost goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte to a red card inside the first minute after bringing down Romain Hamouma outside the area, but despite that they looked set to hold out for a point.
That was until the 89th minute when Hamouma popped up to hammer Neal Maupay's pass beyond substitute keeper Florent Chaigneau to break Les Merlus' hearts.
Sunday's other game saw Lille and Bordeaux share a goalless draw, leaving both sides still waiting for their first wins.
