Permanent switch for striker

Sampdoria have completed the permanent signing of Antonio Cassano from Real Madrid. The striker has been on loan at Samp for the past 12 months and his impressive performances have persuaded the Serie A club to take up their option to buy him. Cassano joined Real on a long-term deal from Roma in 2006 but he failed to settle in Spain and fell out of favour with then manager Fabio Capello. The 25-year-old enjoyed far more success back in Italy and netted 10 goals in 22 appearances for Sampdoria. Real have not disclosed any details of the permanent transfer but reports from Spain suggest he has been given a free transfer. Italian sources, meanwhile, claim that Cassano has put pen to-paper on a five-year contract with Sampdoria. Cassano is currently away with the Italy squad after earning a surprise recall to Roberto Donadoni's 23-man squad for Euro 2008.
