Spain midfielder Sergio Busquets has revealed he would like to compete at the London 2012 Olympics.

Midfielder wants to emulate Barcelona team-mate Xavi

Spain midfielder Sergio Busquets has revealed he would like to compete at the London 2012 Olympics. The World Cup winner feels that he could mentor his fellow countrymen just as his Barcelona team-mate Xavi did in playing at the Sydney Olympics back at the start of the millennium. The midfielder, who won football's biggest prize with Spain in South Africa earlier this year will be 24 when the competition starts. The Olympic men's football tournament is for players 23 and under but teams are also allowed to field three players over that age. Busquets feels his experience, which also includes winning two Spanish league titles and the Champions League with Barca, could help players currently with the under-21 team to Olympic gold. "I'd like to help out the under-21 side," Busquets said. "Obviously my main aim at the moment is to help the full side get through to the next European Championship finals. "But certainly I've spoken with people like Xavi who have experienced the Olympic tournament and it's something that is a fantastic experience to live through."

Undaunted

However, Busquets' Olympic ambition could leave him without much of a break. The Euro 2012 final is scheduled for 1st July should defending champions Spain make it that far and the Olympic football tournament runs from July 25th to August 11th. The Primera Liga season will begin again about three weeks after that. But Busquets is undaunted by the number of games he might have to play and is relishing the task if he is given the opportunity. He concluded: "If I can lend a hand in any aspect, I would love to do that for the younger lads and help them toward the Olympic title."
