Midfielder believes Catalan giants were too strong for Real

Barcelona midfielder Xavi claims the Catalan giants were 'far superior' in their first Clasico encounter of the season with Real Madrid. Pep Guardiola's side got off to a shocking start at Santiago Bernabeu, with Karim Benzema firing the hosts in front after just 23 seconds. Barca slowly began to take control of proceedings, though, and responded to that early setback with strikes from Alexis Sanchez, Xavi and Cesc Fabregas. Xavi claims the reigning Primera Liga champions were full value for the win, with Real having been given a footballing masterclass. "We were very superior to Real Madrid today," he told La Sexta. "We wanted to be brave here. We know that you cannot win otherwise and the team played a great match in every department. We are far superior to Real Madrid."

Philosophy

"The issue was not to lose our philosophy," he continued. "Victor Valdes has been very brave in spite of the initial error and was able to recover and play very well. "I am very happy about everything, for the victory, and the most important thing is that collectively we played a great game and we were very superior." Barcelona now have a break from domestic duties, with their attention set to turn to the Club World Cup in Japan. "We leave with a good taste in our mouths and we leave with the intention of winning the tournament," said Xavi.
