Zaragoza set up Gabi deal

Zaragoza have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Atletico midfielder Gabi for next season.

Real Zaragoza have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Gabi for next season.

The 23-year-old, full name Gabriel Fernandez Arenas, was a target for Zaragoza during the transfer window.

However, their hopes of signing him were dashed in mid-December when Atletico boss Javier Aguirre decided to hand him his fifth league appearance of the season in a match against Getafe, thus scuppering any chance of a move in January under Spanish league rules.

However, having made just one league start all term, Gabi is ready to seek a new challenge at the end of the season with Atletico unlikely to stand in his way.

The former Getafe man will hope the chance of regular football can kick-start his career having failed to fulfil his obvious potential at the Vicente Calderon.

Zaragoza boss Victor Fernandez is also looking to set up a deal for Real Madrid second-choice keeper Diego Lopez.

The shot-stopper is understood to be tired of playing second-string to Iker Casillas and is ready to move on in the summer.
