Germany international set for medical in Madrid

Stuttgart have confirmed that Sami Khedira has joined Real Madrid, subject to a medical. The midfielder has been linked with the Spanish giants for several months and speculation increased after his excellent performances in Germany's progress to the semi-finals of this summer's World Cup. New Real manager Jose Mourinho has been keen to add some trademark defensive resilience to his inherited midfield and Khedira is viewed as the player to fill that role. Stuttgart were reluctant to let the 23-year-old leave the Mercedes-Benz Arena, but they have agreed a deal without releasing details of the transfer fee or contractual agreements. A statement on the Bundesliga club's official website read: "In the end, everything went very quickly and those responsible for Stuttgart and Real Madrid agreed a switch for midfielder Sami Khedira. "As soon as the German international has completed the sports physical examination, he will put his signature on the contract." Stuttgart sporting director Fredi Bobic said of Khedira: "We wish him great success with his new challenge in Madrid."
