Livorno have sacked coach Serse Cosmi and put Gennaro Ruotolo back in charge of first-team affairs.

Cosmi dismissed after 13 games without a win

Serie A's bottom club Livorno have sacked coach Serse Cosmi and put Gennaro Ruotolo back in charge of first-team affairs. Ruotolo had led Livorno to promotion from Serie B last season, but lacked the necessary coaching badges for the top flight. He had been assisting Vittorio Russo during the opening weeks of the campaign before Cosmi was appointed back in October. However, Cosmi has failed to lift Livorno's fortunes and a 1-1 draw with Genoa at the weekend made it 13 Serie A games without a win. Cosmi has now been axed by president Aldo Spinelli, with Ruotolo promoted from his role with the Under 19 team.

Difficult challenge

"I'm glad to back on a bench in Serie A," said Ruotolo. "I understand the situation and it is not easy, but for a football man, the important thing is to stay in the environment, to train and work. "It will be a difficult challenge, but we will give it our all." Livorno are currently eight points from safety, but have a relatively kind run-in for the remaining six games of the campaign.
