Wins for Inter, Bari, Napoli, Sampdoria and Palermo
Inter Milan move back to the top of Serie A after a 2-0 win at Lazio, while Siena are relegated, Sampdoria stay fourth and Atalanta suffer a blow.
Roma's win over Parma on Saturday lifted them to the summit of the table, but
Inter continued their good form and built on that epic UEFA Champions League result against Barcelona in midweek.
Walter Samuel broke the deadlock with a header on the stroke of half-time and Thiago Motta sealed the win with 20 minutes remaining, leaving
Lazio still in danger.
Atalanta are one step closer to relegation after they conceded a late goal to draw with
Bologna.
All eyes were on the battle at the bottom at Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia, but it was heartache for Atalanta as the score ended 1-1.
The home side needed a win to peg their opponents back to within two points with two games remaining, and they took the lead through Tiberio Guarente, although Jaime Valdes had already missed a penalty for them.
Things started to go wrong for Atalanta on the stroke of half-time as Maximiliano Pellegrino was sent off, and Federico Peluso scored an own goal six minutes from time to secure a vital point for Bologna.
Elsewhere,
Sampdoria stay in fourth position after a 2-0 win at home against
Livorno.
Antonio Cassano gave Samp the lead after just five minutes and Reto Ziegler netted five minutes before the final whistle to leave his side in the driving seat to seal a European spot this season.
Palermo are breathing down Samp's neck though, after they managed a 2-1 win at
Siena, which resulted in their relegation.
Even a win would not have been enough for Siena to avoid the drop and they went two down thanks to goals from Edinson Cavani and Fabrizio Miccoli, although Emanuele Calaio did pull one back.
Napoli jump into sixth after a 2-1 win at
Chievo, who had a man sent off in the dying seconds.
German Denis had put Napoli in front but Pablo Granoche levelled the score before Ezequiel Lavezzi sealed the win.
Santiago Morero was given his marching orders for Chievo in the 89th minute for a second yellow card.

Napoli leapfrog
Juventus in the table, after the Old Lady could only muster a 1-1 draw at
Catania, leaving them unable to qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League.
Matias Silvestre put the home side in front after 23 minutes but Claudio Marchisio equalised seven minutes after half-time.
The point virtually assures Catania's safety this term, as they are six points above Atalanta with a superior goal difference.
Bari move into the top half after a convincing 3-0 victory over
Genoa.
Riccardo Meggiorini, Jose Ignacio Castillo and Barreto got the goals for Bari, who are now just two points behind Genoa.
Meanwhile, in the final game of the day
Cagliari and
Udinese played out an entertaining 2-2 draw.
Cagliari took the lead through Andrea Lazzari on the quarter-hour mark but Udinese hit back with two quickfire goals from Antonio Di Natale and Alexis Sanchez before Jeda levelled after the break.
