Hamburg supporters have started a petition to sign Northern Ireland forward Will Grigg.

Grigg, 24, fired Wigan to the League One championship last season with 25 goals and was in Northern Ireland's Euro 2016 squad, though he did not make an appearance in France.

The striker shot to worldwide fame before and during the tournament due to the popular 'Will Grigg's on Fire' chant.

Upon Northern Ireland's arrival back to Belfast following their last-16 defeat to Wales, Grigg was serenaded by 10,000 of the country's fans and Hamburg supporters now appear eager for some of the same.

By Thursday afternoon, the petition had gathered more than 6,500 signatures after being created by followers of the Bundesliga club, who finished 10th last campaign.

"We start here with a petition to direct the attention of HSV (Hamburg) to a transfer of the Northern Ireland international Will Grigg," a post on the petition's page explained.

The petition also claimed Grigg's market value to be 1.5million euros (£1.2m) and added that the forward would not only "fill a sporting gap" but would probably "bring in that much several times over in merchandising" due to his international reputation since Euro 2016.
