Laszlo Benes' first Bundesliga goal gave Borussia Monchengladbach a 1-0 home victory against Hertha Berlin.

The 19-year-old, on only his second league appearance, inflicted a seventh successive away league loss on the capital club with a low, 25-yard strike beyond Rune Jarstein after 16 minutes.

The hosts should have led after only two minutes when Jonas Hofmann went through on goal and set up Thorgan Hazard but his shot towards the unguarded net was brilliantly blocked by Jordan Torunarigha.

Salomon Kalou saw a shot hit the crossbar as Hertha tried to respond while Hofmann was unlucky to send efforts against both posts within the space of a minute. Valentin Stocker had the last chance to equalise and rescue a point but his shot hit the side-netting and Hertha stay sixth in the table.

Leipzig extended their lead over third-placed Hoffenheim back to four points with a 3-2 win at Mainz, who had Jean-Philippe Gbamin sent off late on. Goals from Marcel Sabitzer and Timo Werner just after half-time put Leipzig in control but a Jairo Samperio penalty midway through the second half reduced the hosts' deficit. Naby Keita restored the two-goal cushion but Yoshinori Muto replied again in injury time shortly after Gbamin's red card.

Ingolstadt boosted their survival hopes with victory over fellow strugglers Augsburg as they held on to win 3-2 at the WWK Arena. Sonny Kittel's goal and a double from Almog Cohen had the visitors in complete control with 67 minutes on the clock but Augsburg got back into the match through Paul Verhaegh's penalty and a Halil Altintop strike.

Ingolstadt had looked doomed but back-to-back wins have moved them to within four points of Augsburg and Mainz and given them real hope for the remainder of the season.
