Criticism and controversy forces Frings to contemplate career

Germany midfielder Torsten Frings has admitted that he is unsure just how long he can continue in football. The Werder Bremen man came under criticism for his performance with the national team last week, prompting the German media to question whether he still had much to offer to Joachim Low's side. At 32, Frings is well aware that his career will soon be coming to a close, but the all-action midfielder does retain hopes of an appearance at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. "I will have to wait and see how long I can succeed in the game with my powerful style," said Frings. "I have been to two World Cups during my career, and may go to a third in the future. I think that would be the indication that I have enjoyed a great career in the game."

Ill-advised remarks

However, those chances of making a third tournament will be significantly lessened if Low is still in charge of the German national team. Frings is currently embroiled in a public spat after criticising the Germany coach for excluding him from recent qualifiers. Subsequently, Frings' appearances for Germany have been even further reduced, and the midfield dynamo has since accepted that he reacted poorly to his coach's decision. "I would definitely have opted for a different way of discussing it," Frings reflected. "This was not well advised and I feel I may have made a mistake in doing it the way I did."
