Cameroon are expected to call up a replacement for Schalke youngster Joel Matip.

Youngster fails to link up with squad

Cameroon are expected to call up a replacement for Schalke youngster Joel Matip. The 18-year-old German-born midfielder was named in Cameroon's squad for the African Cup of Nations. Matip, who is the cousin of former Cameroon ace Joseph Desire-Job, has only just made his debut for Schalke's first-team, but the African nation were keen to recruit him. Now after being named, Matip failed to turn up for a pre-tournament friendly in Kenya - amid claims his passport had not been finalised. Cameroon are now set to name a replacement ahead of their opening game against Gabon next Wednesday. Schalke will be pleased that Matip is not going, after they expressed their shock at his initial call-up. "In our view it makes no sense he travels there," said coach Felix Magath.
