Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen are set to be without skipper Torsten Frings for at least two matches.
The former Germany international has been forced to undergo emergency surgery on his hip.
Frings is disappointed by the setback but is relieved to get the problem treated and is looking forward to returning to action.
Frings told Kreiszeitung Syke newspaper: "It was a bruise nearby my hip bone that had been enlarged in a way that my thigh became rock-hard and extremely thick. The pains I felt became unbearable.
"The doctors then removed that rubbish, now I am feeling better. I am trying to get back into training next week.
"I am a toughie and I won't let it get me down. I had a problem with that for some time, now against Hamburg I got a hit on it again. It became awful then."
In addition to the bad news concerning Frings, Werder will also be without former Chelsea striker Claudio Pizarro after the striker sustained another torn thigh muscle.
Pizarro, who had recently been out for four weeks with the same injury, said: "This is a disaster, it's unbelievable, it sucks. I am hoping to get over this a bit faster, I do not want to be out for so long time again.
"I have probably been playing a bit too long against Hamburg this weekend."
