Germany international signs two-year extension to 2014

Germany international Marcel Schafer has signed a new deal with Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg. The 27-year-old full-back had a year left on his existing deal and has agreed an extension to 2014. Schafer joined the club from Munich 1860 in 2007 and earned his Germany debut in 2008 before helping Wolfsburg to the 2008/09 league title. "I am very happy to remain at VfL Wolfsburg," he told the club's official website. "I owe much to the club and I also owe much to manager Felix Magath. I must also say that my family enjoys being around here.

Further success

"I want to be successful again with VfL Wolfsburg in the league and cup competitions in the next few years. I believe we are able to achieve much." Magath led Wolfsburg to their first Bundesliga title in 2008/09 before leaving for Schalke but he returned to the Volkswagen Arena in March. Schafer was a regular during the title-winning campaign and has gone on to earn eight caps for Germany, playing 129 Bundesliga games for Wolfsburg and scoring six goals.
