Bundesliga outfit keen to keep academy product

Schalke boss Felix Magath has vowed to keep highly-rated defender Benedikt Howedes at the club. The 21-year-old has drawn many admiring glances of late, with numerous clubs reported to be monitoring his situation. With Schalke currently experiencing financial difficulties, they are expected to be forced into sales during the winter transfer window. Magath has conceded as much, admitting that he would consider offers for any players except Germany international keeper Manuel Neuer. That alerted clubs to the possible availability of Howedes, but Schalke have now revealed that they also intend to retain the services of the commanding defender. "Benni is a player who comes from here and has great potential," Magath told the club's official website. "I don't expect him to get worse, but to get better. Therefore, it would not make much sense letting a player like him go."
