PSV overcame Ajax 4-2 in an exciting encounter on Sunday afternoon at the Amsterdam ArenA to win the Johan Cruyff Schaal Cup. Eredivisie champions Ajax were outplayed at their home ground by Dutch Cup winners PSV in the traditional curtain-raiser to the new season. PSV took the lead after just three minutes as Ola Toivonen headed home a Dries Mertens corner. It was the fastest goal in the competition's history and the Eindhoven side doubled their advantage after 11 minutes.

Jeremain Lens steamed up from the right and after beating Daley Blind for pace chipped over goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer from 12 yards. Ajax were back in the game a minute before the break when a Theo Janssen corner was headed home by centre-half Toby Alderweireld. However, eight minutes into the second half PSV extended their two-goal advantage when, after he was played in by Jetro Willems, Toivonen powered his shot home from eight yards. With 15 minutes left Ajax pulled a goal back when Marcello put the ball into his own net but Georginio Wijnaldum secured the win in injury-time.
