Ajax on the brink of title

Ajax need just one point to regain the Eredivisie title after grabbing a 2-1 victory at Twente on Sunday. Frank de Boer's side are actually already just about champions as their far superior goal difference means they could lose both their remaining games and still take the title. Former Twente man Theo Janssen put Ajax ahead from the penalty spot after 30 minutes, but Leroy Fey looked to have salvaged something for Steve McClaren's side as he scored 18 minutes from time. But then Dutch international Gregory van der Wiel fired home to give Ajax all three points. Ajax can now claim their title as early as Wednesday when they host VVV Venlo. Feyenoord are now clear in second place as they beat rivals AZ Alkmaar 1-0 at De Kuip, with Otman Bakkal scoring the only goal of the game. Alkmaar are now down to fourth as PSV Eindhoven moved into third with a 3-1 win over Roda JC. Dries Mertens opened the scoring for PSV after seven minutes and Brazilian Marcelo doubled their lead. Sanharib Malki pulled one back with for Roda, but the home side then had goalkeeper Pawel Kieszek dismissed. Jeremain Lens missed the resulting penalty, but PSV still had another goal in them as Memphis Depay scored late on. Two goals in the space of as many second-half minutes ensured mid-table pair NEC Nijmegen and RKC Waalwijk shared the spoils at De Goffert. The result means both sides can still qualify for the Europa League play-offs by finishing eighth, but neither got the victory that would have really bolstered their hopes. NEC substitute Melvin Platje gave his side the lead in the 58th minute, only for the equaliser to come almost immediately through Rick ten Voorde.
