Northern Ireland were left to contemplate a potential defensive crisis following the news Jonny Evans will have a scan on a groin injury on Sunday.

The West Brom club captain had to be replaced by Allan Nyom just after the half-hour mark in their 1-0 defeat to the Saints.

The experienced defender has been an integral member of Northern Ireland's success in the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign but could miss out on their two-legged World Cup play-off against Switzerland on November 9 and 12, live on Sky Sports.

Tony Pulis confirmed that Evans, 29, would undergo a scan on Sunday to ascertain the severity of the injury.

"We are not sure until we scan it," Pulis said. "Everybody in Northern Ireland will be concerned about Jonny."

O'Neill will be desperate to call upon one of his squad's most senior figures who helped his country to Euro 2016 in France.

Evans has made six Premier League appearances this season for Pulis' side since recovering from a hamstring injury which curtailed his pre-season at The Hawthorns.

Gareth McAuley could provide cover for his Baggies teammate should Evans' injury rule him out of contention for O'Neill's squad for the Switzerland tie, with the first leg in Belfast just 19 days away.

Fellow centre-backs Craig Cathcart and 38-year-old Aaron Hughes, who has missed Hearts' recent fixtures with a calf injury, are also both doubtful for the play-offs.
