England's Euro 2016 campaign ended in humiliating fashion against Iceland and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has not held back with his player grades for the tournament.
With the inquest into England's exit already well under way, we asked the former international to give his verdict on the team's key contributors on a grading scale from A+ to F.
From Joe Hart to Harry Kane, here's what he had to say...
Joe Hart - F
Terrible. It was a nightmare tournament for the Man City goalkeeper. He barely had anything to do but the two mistakes, against Wales and Iceland, were costly. He usually saves those in his sleep.
Kyle Walker - B+
I thought he was one of the best players at the tournament in the first couple of matches but he made a key error for Iceland's first goal and that was a big one. It's what people will remember, but I thought he was very good going forward overall.
Danny Rose - B+
It's a similar story to Walker. They both were rotated at Tottenham and it looked like they were England's freshest players. He was good going forward and I don't think he did a lot wrong over the course of the competition.
Chris Smalling and Gary Cahill - B+
We didn't really get tested defensively because we never played against a top team. We let in two goals against Iceland, but I don't see what Smalling and Cahill did wrong. When you look back, Walker fell asleep for the first goal and Hart should have saved the second. Neither was Cahill nor Smalling's fault and the Wales free-kick by Gareth Bale was Hart again.
Eric Dier - C
He got a lot of praise after the first game but Russia were terrible and I'd say they were the worst team in the whole tournament. Dier had one good match, but we played against teams happy to sit back and that didn't suit him.
He isn't really a passer, and I think he would have been better against the top teams, the likes of France and Germany, but the circumstances didn't suit a holding midfielder because we had to chase results.
Wayne Rooney - B
He was one of our better players in the first two matches but in the last 40 minutes against Iceland he had a bit of a nightmare and that's all people will remember. If you go to a football game and ask a fan, they will talk about who played well in the final 30 minutes.
Rooney gave the ball away cheaply against Iceland, but there were a lot of players hiding. Every time he got his head up there was nobody available and he got the blame for that. But I looked at it and he always wanted the ball in the final stages when it was going horribly wrong. Many of his team-mates didn't.
Dele Alli - D
Wow. He struggled badly. We build these players up but he was playing League One football for MK Dons the season before last. He had the season of his life at Tottenham and all of a sudden we expect him to carry England to European Championship glory. The kid is 20 years old. He played so many games for Spurs last season and it looked like he had lead boots on.
Jack Wilshere - D
Wilshere didn't do anything for me. People were hoping he would be the X-factor but he didn't produce. Sometimes I watch him and I ask, 'What does he actually do?' He doesn't score and he doesn't spray passes around. He needs to be playing one-twos and opening defences higher up the pitch. I think he's a No 10, not a holding midfielder.
But can you imagine what Renato Sanches would have done to him if England played Portugal? Sanches has so much energy, he beats players easily and England's midfield wouldn't get near him. He's 18 and flies around the pitch, and in five years I think he will be the best player in the world.
Raheem Sterling - D
I'm not his biggest fan but like Alli he's still so young. I'm not sure if he knows the game and his confidence was shot, so what was Roy Hodgson doing playing him in the last game? The poor lad was gone, he's getting jeered by the fans and he played him again. Did Hodgson think anything was going to be different?
Sterling needs to learn the game, and it might sound a bit harsh, but I don't think he kicks the ball properly. I've never seen him drill it. He puts his head down when he runs too, so I think he needs to stay behind in training, learn to get his head up and improve as a player.
Adam Lallana - B
Over the course of the tournament he did OK and he was very unlucky at the end - the fact he didn't play against Iceland was an absolute joke of a decision. He would have been one of the first players I would have picked. Iceland were always going to sit 10 behind the ball and Lallana is great in tight positions. He had to play and the fact he wasn't involved is a major ricket.
Daniel Sturridge - C
Daniel Sturridge is a centre-forward, not a winger. I think he's our best player, best goalscorer and biggest talent, and he was playing out of position.
By the end he was dropping deep and picking the ball up off our centre-halves. What's he going to do? Is it Escape to Victory and he's going to beat their whole team and score? I don't think he did enough over the competition, but he scored a vital goal against Wales and he was playing out of position so I can't be too harsh.
Harry Kane - D-
He's another who had lead boots on. It was a very disappointing tournament for him, and I'm a big fan, but it's a jump to international tournament football and he didn't look sharp at all. Considering the high hopes we had for him, he hardly took any shots, he didn't score and never looked like scoring.
And why was he taking corners? Surely you've got to have a bit about you and say to Roy, 'I'm the Premier League Golden Boot winner, I want to score goals and I've got to get in the box'.
I don't remember Ian Wright taking corners at Arsenal. He was around the goalkeeper and cleaning up. The same with Alan Shearer, he would have turned around and said, 'I score goals, I need to be in the middle. That's my job'.
Jamie Vardy - C
The teams we played against really didn't suit his style. Vardy, for me, was a player going to the tournament to come on as a substitute and Roy got it horribly wrong in the first game because he was ideal with England 1-0 up against Russia.
Vardy can't play against teams that sit 10 behind the ball and that's why he's not going to Arsenal. If you look at England's matches, every opponent used that tactic.
He scored an important goal against Wales, but I can't remember him getting involved and against Slovakia he had a big chance, but then he barely touched the ball. He needed to play against teams like Germany and Spain and then maybe he would have had a chance on the counter.
Marcus Rashford - B+
Rashford showed more in four minutes against Iceland than his team-mates combined in the previous 86. He came on against Wales and was bright too.
He wanted the ball, was eager to attack defenders and did nothing wrong. As long as he keeps his head, he's got a bright future and looks like someone who will be top drawer.
