Roy Hodgson thinks England manager Gareth Southgate has done the right thing by speaking to players who are being left out of the World Cup squad

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson says Gareth Southgate has done the right thing by calling the players who did not make his World Cup squad.

Southgate will name his 23-man group he is taking to Russia on Wednesday with England beginning their Group G campaign against Tunisia on June 18.They will play Panama on June 24 before facing Belgium on June 28.

Sky Sports News understands Southgate has already told Joe Hart and Jack Wilshere they will not be in involved in the campaign.

Hodgson, who managed England at the last three major tournaments, told Sky Sports News: "He [Southgate] doesn't need advice, I certainly wouldn't dream of giving him any.

"I think he has already done what I thought was important and that is if you have important players who are going to be left out, who you have worked with in the past, you make the phone call to them.

Southgate cannot wait to crack on with preparing for the World Cup

"Do this before you stand in front of a camera, or a host of journalists and announce it. I know he has done that, so I am sure he has done all the things that needs to be done.

"I can only hope he doesn't lose any of the players he has chosen for when he eventually decides these are the ones I want.

"There are four, five weeks of training and preparation matches to go through and in my experience it is quite possible to lose one or two players you were counting on in those moments."

Swansea defender Alfie Mawson will also not be included in the England World Cup squad due to the knee surgery he had on Monday, keeping him out for between six weeks and two months.
