Premier League chief expects vote to go down to wire

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore insists it is 'too difficult to call' who will win the bid to host the 2018 World Cup. Fifa will vote to decide the venue of the showpiece tournament in Zurich on Thursday, with England genuine contenders to win the ballot as they compete with Russia, Spain/Portugal and Holland/Belgium. And while confident the England delegation have done everything in their power to present the strongest possible bid, Scudamore believes the vote will go all the way down to the wire. "You can't be confident because it's just too difficult to call," Scudamore, speaking from Zurich, told Sky Sports News. "Too many things can happen. You're talking about getting inside the heads of 20, 22 men who all have their own views, and even that might be altered at the very end. So you can't really say." England make their final presentation to Fifa officials at 10am on Thursday, and Scudamore is aware their last push for votes is a crucial one.

Nerves

"There'll be butterflies, there'll be nerves," he added. "But it's been fantastically practised and it'll be as good as it can be. "We've been doing all we can. Nobody can say we haven't tried, we really have tried." Fears have surfaced that England's bid could be harmed by the pitch invasion that occurred following the final whistle of Birmingham's Carling Cup victory over midlands rivals Aston Villa on Wednesday night. Scudamore, however, feels the ugly scenes won't impact on the vote, adding: "I don't think it will. It filtered through last night and most people were aware of it. "If you actually analyse it, it looked ugly but I think the West Midlands police did a fantastic job. "Within minutes it had been contained. We know it was a difficult fixture, it was well managed and it won't have an impact today."
