Gordon Strachan says nobody can question the personality, character and drive of Scotland following their 2-2 draw with England

Gordon Strachan hailed Scotland's "personality, character and drive" after a dramatic 2-2 draw against England at Hampden Park on Saturday.

The hosts looked set for a famous victory when two Leigh Griffiths free-kicks overturned Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's opener.

But Harry Kane struck deep into added time to snatch a draw for England, ensuring they remain top of Group F and on course to qualify for next year's World Cup in Russia.

Fourth-placed Scotland face an uphill battle to secure the second spot that would give them a chance of reaching the play-off, but Strachan was still proud of their efforts at Hampden.

"I can sum up the game by saying, no matter what anybody thinks of us as players, where we are and the way we play our football, nobody can question the personality, character and drive," he told Sky Sports. "That was outstanding.

"In terms of getting the most out of each other and as a group, it was phenomenal.

Highlights from a dramatic Group F World Cup Qualifier between Scotland and England at Hampden Park

"It was a bit like a heavyweight boxer fighting a middleweight. You can keep getting knocked down and getting back up and people will say pack it in. The heavyweight will be saying, 'Pack it in'.

"We kept coming back, made a couple of chances in the second half and felt better about ourselves.

"I changed the system a bit - we knew we would change the system at that stage at that score - and that worked. Two wonderful goals.

"You are not going to believe this but I'm 60 [years old]. That would probably have been the best ever result in my career. But we're not there."

Scotland were one minute away from victory when Kane volleyed home from Raheem Sterling's cross, leaving Strachan to rue a lapse in concentration.

Leigh Griffiths says Scotland's 2-2 draw with England feels like a defeat after Harry Kane rescued a point in injury time

"I keep saying to young coaches, 'You can have all the systems you want, it is about 10 to 15 yard passes that make the big difference'," he said.

"It had to go wide, then we have to stop the cross and then we have to deal with the cross."

Strachan also paid tribute to his defence, adding: "I know we have to get better in certain areas. The middle three at the back were absolutely phenomenal.

"You have to remember our centre-backs, one has just signed for Hearts, who were sixth in the Premiership. One is now in the First Division (League One), our right wing-back doesn't get a game at Derby.

"To play against that group of [England] players, if you put them up for sale, billions [of pounds]."
