Chris Gunter insists the Wales players were not being disrespectful by celebrating England's Euro 2016 exit.
A video emerged online of the Welsh squad cheering and jumping from chairs in their team hotel after Iceland knocked England out with a 2-1 win on Monday night.
Gunter says the players were not celebrating because of England's demise but because it meant they are the final British team left in the tournament.
"It might be easy to see it as slightly over the top but it wasn't meant to be that way. We're proud to be the last home nation left in the tournament," said right-back Gunter, who will be part of the Wales squad which faces Belgium in the quarter-finals on Friday.
"Football has a strange way of bringing out emotions. It wasn't meant to come across as disrespectful."
Fellow Welsh defender Neil Taylor also defended the squad's actions, saying they were simply celebrating an excellent result for a team who were not expected to win.
"We follow the underdogs in this tournament, whoever they are," he said. "Iceland were written off really early but they've been unbelievable.
"Our celebrations were because of how well they've done."
