Martin Tyler is commentating for UEFA at Euro 2016, but Sky Sports' Voice of Football is sharing his experiences right here on skysports.com. In his latest diary entry he reflects on an historic night in Lille as Wales reached the semi-finals by beating Belgium 3-1.

Back in 1976 I was an editorial assistant at London Weekend Television and worked on the Euros when Wales were denied a place in the semi-finals by Yugoslavia.

So to be in Lille 40 years later and see them reach their first major semi-final was truly something special.

I've been at a lot of historic football occasions in my time, but this was just amazing - and it was thoroughly deserved against a team that included superstars like Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku.

Everybody is saying it was the greatest night in Welsh football history, so I might as well join in because it's absolutely true.

I am writing this inside the stadium in Lille and everywhere I go I seem to bump into emotional former Wales internationals. People were in tears as they sang 'Land of my Fathers'.

It was also the best game of Euro 2016 so far and after some very cautious football this was just what the tournament needed. From the first whistle to the last the game was full of attacking intent.

Belgium only know how to attack and the absence of Jan Vertonghen in defence hit them hard. Before the game you thought that would be an advantage for Wales but after 20 minutes it looked like Belgium were going to win 2-0 or 3-0.

But Wales are the Band of Brothers. They've been described as unbreakable and Belgium couldn't break them.

The magnificent Ashley Williams scored from a sensible corner routine which some people might describe as obvious. They used to call that tactic the 'bus queue' and it worked for them tonight.

I was surprised to see Hal Robson-Kanu start the game, but it proved to be a great decision as he scored a sublime goal in front of the watching Ian Rush. I imagine he won't be short of offers for next season after his contract expired!

Then Sam Vokes came off the bench to score at a time when it looked like the pendulum, might swing back to Belgium. It was proper Championship football, but a lot of teams don't cross the ball these days and it was so effective.

The only negatives were the yellow cards which will rule Aaron Ramsey and Ben Davies out of the semi-final and that's where the squad comes into play.

Before the match it felt like a home game for Belgium because Lille is so close to the border - it was almost like Wales playing in Bristol.

But in the end it was Wales who felt at home. The wet weather was certainly familiar and there are a few old coal mines around the place.

Most importantly, they look at home in this company. They are in the final four of a 24-team tournament and there aren't enough superlatives to sum up what they've achieved.

The Wales squad have been together for six weeks and now it will become seven - and I must tell you about Gareth Bale's attitude to all this.

Chris Gunter has missed his brother's wedding and Neil Taylor has missed a Beyonce concert - so we asked Gareth what he was missing out on due to the Euros.

He explained he had made no plans until after July 10 - the inference being he expects to play in the final!

As a Brit it was special to be here and I'm sure my great-great Welsh grandmother was up in the skies was joining in with 'Land of My Fathers' on this historic night.
