Martin's starting stats

I was at England's internationals against San Marino and Switzerland this week. England are now 13 games unbeaten since losing to Uruguay in Sao Paulo, which is their best run since 1988-1990 when they went 17 games unbeaten.

The match against Switzerland was England's 200th all-time qualifying game (World Cup and European Championships) and the record is P200 W132 D47 L21. They are unbeaten in the last 27 (W20 D7) since the 1-0 defeat in Dnipro against Ukraine in October 2009.

England are the only team to qualify for Euro 2016 with a 100% record. They have never finished a qualifying campaign of more than four matches with a 100% record.

The 26 goals England have scored is the most they have scored in a European Championship qualifying campaign. They scored 24 in 2008 - and didn't even qualify.

Wayne Rooney, as I'm sure everyone knows, scored his 50th England goal on Tuesday. It was his 34th with his right foot and his sixth penalty (he has a 100% record from the spot for England). It was his 22nd at home and 18th at the new Wembley and he has scored in his last seven competitive internationals. The only group game he has failed to score in was the first one away in Switzerland.

He still hasn't scored an England hat-trick, while Sir Bobby Charlton scored four. The last England hat-trick was more than five years ago when Jermain Defoe got one at home to Bulgaria in September 2010.

Fast starters

BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND - AUGUST 01: Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri during the Pre-Season Friendly match between Birmingham City and Leicester City at
Image: Leicester are one of three sides unbeaten in August

Three teams went unbeaten in the Premier League in August - what's the record number of teams to go unbeaten in August? Benjamin

MARTIN SAYS: Manchester City, Swansea City and Leicester City are the three teams to have gone unbeaten in the Premier League in August and thanks to Opta we know this is well below the record for unbeaten teams in August with nine teams (Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Wolves, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Wigan and Stoke) not suffering defeat in the first month of the 2011/12 season (four rounds of matches)

The following season came close with eight sides undefeated in August, but most clubs had only played two games with Sunderland only featuring in one.

There have been four occasions (1994/95, 1996/97, 2001/02 and 2010/11) during Premier League history of seven sides not losing in the first month of the season.

This season's number is relatively low. There has only been one season in which we have seen fewer than three teams unbeaten at the end of August. That was the 1993/94 season when just two sides - Manchester United and Coventry - had avoided defeat in the first five rounds of matches.

Goal rush

Image: Man City have scored 10 goals without conceding from their first four PL games

Man City have scored 10 goals without conceding any so far this season. What is the longest scoring run a team has gone on before conceding their first goal? Sean

MARTIN SAYS: It has been a brilliant start to the season for Manchester City but so far their 10 goals without conceding is not yet the longest scoring start without letting a goal in - but they still have a chance to beat the record against Crystal Palace this weekend - although Palace have scored in every game they have played this season.

At the top of the pile is Jose Mourinho's Chelsea, who hit 12 goals without answer from their first six matches of the 2005/06 season.

Wigan Athletic, Arsenal, West Brom, Tottenham, Sunderland and Charlton all failed to beat Petr Cech in the Chelsea goal as they went on to win their first six matches. He was finally beaten by Aston Villa striker Luke Moore in the seventh game of the season but Chelsea still went on to win the match and go on to defend the Premier League title.

Interestingly, Joe Hart has also played two games for England this season and not conceded. His personal record this season is that the teams he has played for have scored 18 times without conceding one.

Slow starters

Image: Tottenham are yet to win in the league this season

Five sides have yet to win a Premier League game this season - is that a record? Jimmy

MARTIN SAYS: Tottenham, Watford, Stoke, Newcastle and Sunderland have all failed to win in their first four fixtures, but according to our friends at Opta, there have been two occasions in Premier League history where five teams failed to win their first FIVE games of the season.

In the 1994/95 season Coventry City, Crystal Palace, Everton, Leicester City and West Ham all failed to register a win in their first five Premier League matches.

The omens do not look too good for the teams who are without a win so far this season with Crystal Palace and Leicester both relegated at the end of the 1994/95 season.

The other season where five sides failed to win their first five games was in the 2012/13 season when Liverpool, Norwich, QPR, Reading and Stoke failed to register wins.

On that occasion, both QPR and Reading were relegated down to the Championship.

Striker streak

Swansea striker Bafetimbi Gomis celebrates
Image: Bafetimbi Gomis has four goals from the first four games of the season

Bafetimbi Gomis has scored in every game so far this season. Is this the longest scoring run at the start of the season? Jeremy Angell

MARTIN SAYS: Bafetimbi Gomis has been in red-hot goalscoring form so far this season but he'll need to find the net against Watford at Vicarage Road if he is to equal the record streak at the start of a campaign.

Both Manchester United's Wayne Rooney (2011/12) and former Arsenal forward Jose Antonio Reyes (2004/05) have scored in each of the first five games of the season.

However, if Gomis doesn't find the back of the net at the weekend he is still in excellent company.

Last season Diego Costa scored in his first four Premier League games for Chelsea, while England striker Daniel Sturridge repeated the feat for Liverpool at the start of the 2013/14 season.

Also in the 2013/14 season Arsenal's Olivier Giroud hit the back of the net in four consecutive games at the start of the season, but before that you have to go back to 2009/10 for it to happen again with Emmanuel Adebayor for Manchester City.

Englishmen Bobby Zamora (2006/07) and Darren Bent (2005/06) have also achieved the same milestone for West Ham and Charlton respectively.

They are also joined by former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistlerooy (2005/06) and ex-Derby forward Branko Strupar (2000/01).

First v Second

Image: Crystal Palace face Man City this weekend in a battle of the top two in the PL

I notice second plays first this weekend when Crystal Palace play Man City. When second plays first, who usually wins? Greg

MARTIN SAYS: When asked about first playing second in the Premier League I wouldn't have been expecting Crystal Palace to feature but Alan Pardew's men have been brilliant so far this season.

In Premier League history, based on positions at the start of the day, there have been 35 games between first and second and there's nothing to split them on head-to-head with both positions grabbing 14 wins each.

There have been seven draws when the top team plays their nearest rival.

Red mist

We've had 11 red cards already, I believe… is that near to topping the charts after four fixtures for each side? Tom

MARTIN SAYS: With the help of Opta we've looked back through the Premier League seasons and can tell you we've seen two seasons with more than 11 red cards shown after each team's first four fixtures.

We have to go back over 10 years to see more red cards handed out after the same amount of fixtures, with 19 dished out in 2002 and 13 shown in 2004.

At the other end of the scale only four were shown in 1993, 1999 and 2005, while three reds were pulled out in 1998 and only two at this stage in 1994.

Everybody was seemingly on their best behaviour in 2010 with just the one red card shown to Gary Cahill, who was playing for Bolton in their 4-1 defeat to Arsenal.
