Everton have met the release clause in Aston Villa midfielder Idrissa Gueye's contract, according to Sky sources.

Gueye, who wears his middle name Gana on his shirt, was part of the Villa side relegated from the Premier League last season.

The Senegal international started 35 league games in a defensive midfield position following a £9m move from Lille in 2015.

Marseille have also triggered the release clause, understood to be £7.1m, and Villa boss Roberto Di Matteo has already bought a similar this player in Aaron Tshibola.

Gueye could now become the second signing of the Ronald Koeman era at Goodison Park following this month's arrival of goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg.
