Steve McClaren has called for more time for his ideas to be fully implemented at Nottingham Forest so that they can reap the benefit
The former England manager has endured a challenging start to the Championship term and his side languish just one place above the relegation zone.
Forest fans are eager to regain a place at football's top table in the Premier League having failed in the play-offs for the last two consecutive terms.
Indeed, it is this type of frustration that is causing fans of the former European champions to demand a better start to the campaign.
"Two years running, it's a huge disappointment to fall flat, but you have to recover from that," McClaren told Sky Sports News.
"There are a lot of ingredients in the pot that go together to make it a difficult start.
"It's as I expected, we're learning about the league, we're learning about the club, we're learning about the players and they are learning about us.
"We are trying to find the right blend and balance, we've had nine new players coming in and losing five so with everything thrown in the mix, this is normal."
McClaren insists the teething problems he is experiencing at the City Ground are not unique to this job and maintains the transitional process he is going through happens at every club.
He added: "It doesn't matter where I have been, the first three, four, five months can be very difficult and they have been.
"Until you find the right blend and balance, after say 12 to 15 games then you know where you are, you find the right blend and hopefully it takes off - but we need to start winning."
