LA Galaxy goalkeeper Clement Diop had an evening to forget as his horrendous gaffe set Sporting Kansas City on their way to a 2-1 victory at Stubhub Center

LA Galaxy goalkeeper Clement Diop had an evening to forget as his horrendous error gifted Sporting Kansas City the first goal in their 2-1 victory at the StubHub Center.

The French-born Senegal international opted to punch Roger Espinoza's speculative, long-range effort on 22 minutes and it was a decision which immediately backfired as the ball cannoned off his gloves and into the back of the net.

The 23-year-old hung his head in shame after handing the visitors the lead and quickly apologised to his team-mates and the home faithful.

But the incident clearly had an impact on the rest of Diop's game, with the goalkeeper's positioning called into question when Ike Opara was allowed to acrobatically volley a hanging cross home to double Sporting's lead.

Dave Romney halved the deficit on 77 minutes but there was no way back for the Galaxy as their attempt to deny the Western Conference leaders three points came up short.
