Will Bruin and Gustav Svensson scored to give Seattle Sounders a 2-0 lead over Houston Dynamo in the MLS Western Conference final on Tuesday.
Svensson opened the scoring after 11 minutes after connecting with a corner, while Bruin doubled the lead after 42 minutes knocking a header into the net over the flailing goalkeeper Joe Willis.
Houston played the majority of the game with 10 men after Kalil Anibaba was sent off after 28 minutes after fouling Joevin Jones in the box, though Nico Lodeiro failed to convert from the spot.
The teams will meet again for the second leg next Thursday.
In the Eastern Conference, Toronto FC and Columbus Crew played out a 0-0 draw in a match where the Canadian side failed to produce a shot on target and Crew only managed three.
Their second leg takes place in Toronto next Wednesday.
