The Sunday Supplement panel reflected on Gareth Southgate's squad selection

The Sunday Supplement panel questioned why Gareth Southgate was not more adventurous with his England squad selection, with the Daily Mirror's Andy Dunn saying Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho should have been called up.

Uncapped quartet Nick Pope, James Tarkowski, Alfie Mawson and Lewis Cook were all named in Southgate's squad for the friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy next week.

The friendlies come just three months before the World Cup in Russia, and the Mirror's chief football writer Dunn asked why Southgate has not given opportunities to some younger players, having seen England Under-17s and U20s both win World Cups last year.

"How long ago was it that we were talking about our successful youth teams and talking about those players in them? Why not take a gamble in a squad of 27 and take Phil Foden, who has won the World Cup and scored two goals in the final for the U17 team, or Jadon Sancho, who is playing for Borussia Dortmund.

"There was a chance to be a bit more adventurous, rather than it feeling like a reward for just being a regular in the Premier League and being English. It's not his fault that he doesn't have the resources that Germany have got but he could be a more adventurous rather than just go for people who are doing well in the Premier League."

The Guardian's Stuart James says the squad is one of the weakest he can remember in a long time.

"The worry for me is will we be sat here in a few years' time having the same conversation? We are all excited with what England U17s and U20s have done but will the pathways be there for those players to breakthrough at the first-team level?

"Looking at the England squad it's as weak as I can remember for a long time and accordingly has to manage expectations ahead of the World Cup."

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe feels Lewis Cook benefited from Jack Wilshere's time at the club last season after his England call-up

England are currently seventh favourites for the World Cup behind the likes of Germany, Spain and Argentina.

Daily Express sports writer Matt Dunn thinks Southgate's hand has been forced somewhat by the lack of options at his disposal.

"Gareth Southgate has put together the best he can with what he has got and unfortunately it's not very good because there aren't that many England players any more.

"To be fair to Southgate he recognises there is a lack of talent and he is trying to get more cohesion with the players he has got and hoping the whole can be a lot better than the sum of the parts."
