Dutch midfielder moves to Serie A

Bayern Munich have confirmed that Mark van Bommel has signed for AC Milan. The 33-year-old asked for his contract with the German champions to be terminated in order to secure the deal. His contract was due to expire at the end of the season and Bayern had already indicated they would not be offering him a new one. "I am leaving FC Bayern with a heavy heart, but with my head held high," said the Dutch midfielder in a statement. "I had four and a half wonderful and successful years here and would like to express my gratitude to the club and the fans. "FC Bayern will always have a place in my heart." The Dutch midfielder had been worried that he would not play a significant part in Louis van Gaal's plans in the second half of the season. Van Bommel had been linked with moves to English Premier League clubs Tottenham and Liverpool, but he has instead opted to play for AC Milan. The Bayern statement added: "The Dutch international asked for his contract to become void to transfer for sporting reasons."
