Checkatrade Trophy round-up: Penalty shootout joy for trio, wins for Swansea and Brighton U21s

A round-up of Tuesday night's action in the Checkatrade Trophy second round, as three teams progressed on penalties.

Oxford, Scunthorpe, and Blackpool all came through penalty shootouts to book their places in the third round of the Checkatrade Trophy on Tuesday night.

In the southern section of the competition, Oxford drew 1-1 away at Southend thanks to a late equaliser from Chris Maguire before advancing 4-3 via spot kicks after Stephen McLaughlin and Simon Cox missed for the hosts.

Blackpool also drew 1-1 away at Doncaster in the northern section and were then presented with a great chance to win the shootout at 4-4 when Jordan Houghton missed for the hosts.

Mark Yeates then saw his effort saved and so the drama continued until Dean Lyness stopped William Longbottom's penalty before Luke Higham converted to seal an 8-7 success.

Also in the northern section Scunthorpe won through 5-3 against Morecambe after another 1-1 draw. Peter Murphy was the only player to miss from the spot as Joe Anyon made the save.

Chesterfield advanced with a 2-0 away victory at Rochdale thanks to goals from Laurence Maguire and Ched Evans while a late winner from Danny Rose gave Mansfield a 3-2 victory at Carlisle.

Back into the southern section and Luton triumphed 3-2 over Swindon, with Isaac Vassell settling matters with a 69th-minute goal while Yeovil thumped MK Dons 4-1 as Alex Lacey found the net at both ends.

The Brighton Under-21 side won 2-1 at AFC Wimbledon and were joined in the third round by Swansea's youngsters, who edged out Norwich's counterparts 1-0.
