Portugal fans celebrated wildly after their team's Euro 2016 triumph

Portugal made history after shocking hosts France to win Euro 2016 - and there were jubilant scenes in the capital city of Lisbon.

Though captain and talisman Cristiano Ronaldo tearfully went off injured in the first half, Eder's extra-time time strike sealed a 1-0 win that earned the country their first major championship.

Portugal finished third in their group and won only one game in 90 minutes - their semi-final against Wales - but supporters celebrated wildly as their players were crowned kings of Europe.

Twelve years ago they suffered heartbreak when they saw their team lose to Greece on home soil in the final of Euro 2004.

But this time it was agony for France, who had carved out the best chances and hit the post at the end of regular time through Andre-Pierre Gignac.

"It was amazing," match-winner Eder told reporters. "We fought with immense strength. I think we deserve this title due to the work we put in, all the players and the staff."
