Arsenal's decline in stats: The numbers behind Arsene Wenger's faltering fortunes

Arsenal Wenger

Arsenal's 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace last week brought up a series of milestones as the pressure continued to build on the beleaguered Arsene Wenger. Will he turn it around against Middlesbrough on Monday Night Football?

Goals from Andros Townsend and Yohan Cabaye, as well as a penalty by Luka Milivojevic at Selhurst Park, gave the Eagles a deserved victory, with the Gunners delivering yet another tame display on their travels.

Here's a flavour of just some of the unwanted records that Arsenal brought up on a night when their own supporters sang that they were not fit to wear the shirts...

  • Wenger has suffered four consecutive away Premier League defeats for the first time as Arsenal manager
  • This is Arsenal's worst away Premier League run since April 1995, when they were managed by Stewart Houston
  • Arsenal conceded three goals in four consecutive away league games for the first time since September 1929
  • In the last eight Premier League games, only Sunderland (six) had lost more games than Arsenal (five)
  • This was Wenger's first defeat against Crystal Palace as Arsenal boss

After the Easter weekend, Arsenal are languishing in seventh spot and run the risk of missing out on the top four for the first time under Wenger.

The Gunners have three games in hand on third-placed Liverpool but are 12 points behind, while they have two games in hand on Manchester City in fourth but are currently 10 points adrift of them.

Manchester United, in fifth, have played a game more and hold a four point advantage. The pressure is on.

The Gunners are sleepwalking to the Europa League, writes Adam Bate.

If Arsenal were to miss out on the top four, it would be unprecedented during the 21-year reign of Wenger at the club.

Since taking over in the autumn of 1996, Wenger has overseen three title wins, six runners-up finishes, five third-places finishes and a further six occasions in which Arsenal have finished fourth.

As it stands, even Everton, three points ahead having played three games more, could finish above Arsenal.

While the situation has deteriorated, the problems are not entirely new.

Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports viewers that it has been "the same plan for 10 years against Arsenal" and there has been a drop off in performance during the second half of Wenger's long reign.

Arsene Wenger's first/last 10 years in charge at Arsenal

Period Trophies Win %
1996/97 - 2005/06 11 57.6%
2006/07 to date 4 57.0%

Curiously, the win percentage has remained similar - 57.6 per cent in the first decade compared to 57.0 per cent since then - but in terms of trophies won, there is a clear difference.

Eleven of Arsenal's 15 trophies under Wenger came in the first 10 years of his spell at the helm.

How much longer the Frenchman's reign will last remains to be seen. But a victory at Middlesbrough now seems like a necessity.
