Marcus Rashford has been named in the England U21 squad for the first time - meaning he is unlikely to be in Sam Allardyce's first senior pool when it is announced on Sunday.

The Manchester United striker's significant progress in the second half of last season saw him called up by former manager Roy Hodgson before Euro 2016.

Rashford scored just three minutes into his senior debut, a 2-1 friendly win against Australia, and that was enough to ensure a place in England's 23-man group which travelled to France, where he made two substitute appearances.

The match against Norway in Colchester is on September 6, two days after the senior side's World Cup preliminary match against Slovakia.

Although U21 boss Gareth Southgate has yet to confirm whether Rashford will feature in both groups, he has suggested the player's focus should be on the younger squad for now.

He told The FA's website: "Last season, his pathway was remarkable and we're very conscious of plotting how we develop our young players.

"We spoke a lot with Manchester United last season when we put him in the U20s in March, which both they and we felt was the right thing at the time.

"He then continued his progress, which was great, and of course he played a part in Roy's squad at the Euros.

"But if he's less likely to start with the seniors at this moment in time - and Sam is quite keen that people are playing regularly - we think that it's now a good opportunity in his international development for him to be with the U21s.

"Marcus is a young player and still developing so this is a big part of his international education really.

"We've got a good week's work ahead with a very strong squad and we're playing Norway, who are doing similar with their players as they've just named Martin Odegaard in their squad.

"We've had it in the past with the likes of Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane, John Stones and Calum Chambers joining us after being with the seniors, so it's something we're familiar with.

"Marcus has a good mentality, so I know he'll respond in the right way and we're looking forward to working with him."

A number of other Premier League players have been selected by Southgate including Arsenal defenders Calum Chambers and Rob Holding.

Leicester forward Demarai Gray is also in the 24-player pool and Jack Grealish remains involved after making his debut for the team in the summer.
