England manager Roy Hodgson has challenged his players to "put a marker down" in order to claim a place in his Euro 2016 squad.

A side captained by Gary Cahill will take on Germany at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on Saturday night before travelling back home to face the Netherlands at Wembley on Tuesday.

Joe Hart, Raheem Sterling and Wayne Rooney are among the notable absentees because of injury, which could offer a number of fringe players a chance to impress.

And when asked whether he intended to field two different teams for the friendlies, Hodgson said: "Probably, yes, but that has not been decided yet and has certainly not been communicated to the players.

"I can't guarantee that every single player will definitely get 90 minutes in the games, but at the same time we are in principle here to utilise the whole squad.

"We want to have a look at people here or at least give them the chance in this final encounter before I have to name 23 to at least try and put a marker down."

Hodgson added: "I think for all national coaches, this time will be important. Especially with the level of opposition we are playing against, so I can't deny that they will be very important occasions.

"Hopefully very good footballing occasions too and there's no doubt what I see and what I've seen so far this week and will continue to see after these games will have an impact - it must.

"They are two further games in our preparations towards France and the Euros. We have three more before the final squad is selected and it is by no means a be-all and end-all selection, but we take the games very seriously and I shall learn some very important lessons, for sure."

Arsenal forward Theo Walcott trained separately from the rest of the England squad on Friday night after picking up a dead leg.
