England player ratings: Peter Taylor gives his verdict on Turkey match

Image: Here is the England XI that started against Turkey on Sunday

England's 2-1 win over Turkey on Sunday afternoon gave Roy Hodgson a chance to assess the form and fitness of his squad ahead of Euro 2016.

With most of Manchester United and Liverpool's players not considered for the game, there was a chance for several fringe players to press their case for inclusion in the final 23-man squad.

But who looked good and who let themselves down? We asked former England caretaker manager Peter Taylor to rate each player out of 10...

Joe Hart - 7

I felt he made a mistake for Turkey's goal, but then he pulled off a really, really good save at the end of the game. He didn't have a great deal to do in between that so it's quite hard to rate him, so I reckon a seven is about right.

Kyle Walker - 8

I thought both of the full-backs are defending better and are going forward well. On the ball I would say Kyle Walker is ahead of Nathaniel Clyne, but defensively the Liverpool player is probably ahead of him. You do get a bit more time on the ball in that position.

Also See:

Danny Rose - 9

Danny Rose got the man of the match award from the sponsors, which I agreed with. I think he's definitely going to be the starting left-back at the Euros. One-on-one defensively it doesn't look like he's going to get beaten.

Gary Cahill - 7

I felt both of the central defenders were steady and defended okay. I don't want to suggest it was a better performance than it was by giving Gary Cahill 8/10 so I'm just going to give him seven. The defence is definitely still the weakness for England

John Stones - 7

John Stones gives the England team a little bit more on the ball and makes the team pass more, despite his lack of experience. He showed great confidence in heading the ball back to Hart at one stage and it was lovely to see. I still think Chris Smalling might get the nod, even though some of the things he did in the FA Cup final were poor. If Stones gets a run of games he might be able to play his way into the team.

Eric Dier - 8

He is an absolute cert in the heart of the England midfield and he always plays the ball simply which is good for the team. I thought he was really good today and he will definitely start for England at the Euros.

Jack Wilshere - 7

He only played 65 minutes, but to be fair he hasn't done too much wrong and when he gets forward you can see what a clever player he is. There was nothing fantastic in his performance and that's why he only merits a seven.

Dele Alli - 7

I will give him a seven because there were both good and bad things in his performance. I thought he showed lovely feet at times and made the first goal, but then he lost his temper and doesn't seem to have the discipline required. England's opponents in France will be looking for any kind of advantage they can get and they will look at videos of this game and think they can wind him up.

Raheem Sterling - 6

I'm giving him a lower mark, which is difficult because I don't want to knock him, but I didn't see him get the ball and burst past an opponent - which is what he is in the team to do. He didn't get a lot of service today and I still think he might go to the Euros, getting the nod just ahead of Andros Townsend.

Jamie Vardy - 8

He was a different class and I was really pleased with his performance. He gave the team options, he showed tremendous work-rate and he is either making goals or scoring goals, which is terrific to see. Will he start? It depends what shape Roy Hodgson opts for, but the advantage he has is that he gives the team a different option and Roy will be aware of that.

Harry Kane - 7

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - MAY 22: Harry Kane of England celebrates with Jamie Vardy of England after he scored the opening goal during the International Frien

I have no problem with Harry Kane's performance today but he has set himself a high standard now and he needs to reach that. Today was an average game for Harry, which is why I have given him an average mark. He scored a goal and then missed a penalty, but even with the penalty miss it was brilliant to see his confidence in striking the ball with such power. He will certainly start as England's centre-forward in France.

Substitutes

Jordan Henderson - 6

I will give both substitutes six because they didn't have much time on the field to make an impact. Jordan Henderson came on and hit a lovely cross-field ball to Vardy and I think he will end up going to the tournament.

Danny Drinkwater - 6

I think only one of these two substitutes will go to France and I think Drinkwater might be the one to miss out. He came on and played a lovely ball to Vardy, but it's difficult to judge him as he didn't spend long on the pitch.
