Rangers' Jason Holt says Gordon Strachan right to exclude him from Scotland squads

Rangers midfielder Jason Holt says Gordon Strachan was right not to include him in his Scotland squads.

Holt has been a key figure for the Light Blues this season, scoring 10 goals in 34 appearances for Mark Warburton's side.

The former Hearts player has helped the club open up a commanding 14-point lead over nearest challengers Falkirk, who they face on Friday as they look to edge closer to their return to the top division.

He and team-mate Lee Wallace were widely tipped to be included by Strachan, who announced his squads for the upcoming friendlies against the Czech Republic and Denmark earlier this week.

Ibrox boss Warburton admitted he was surprised at their omission but Holt says he has a lot to do before he can hope to be part of the national set-up.

"If you ask any player, then they will have their aspirations of playing for their country and I am no different," he said.

"There are a lot of good players in that squad, players playing in the top leagues in England, so I think I still have a long way to go.

"When you see your name getting thrown about like that it's flattering but I don't think you can look too much into it, it's people's opinion and you can only do what you can do on the pitch."

Holt's focus is on steering Rangers towards the Premiership, after missing out on last year's promotion celebrations with Hearts after being loaned-out to Sheffield United.

But the 23-year old is now hoping he can enjoy success this time around, with Rangers potentially just four points away from sealing the Championship title.

"I was over the moon for the Hearts lads that day they lifted the trophy," he added. "They had been my team-mates, some of them for a long time, and I was just really happy for them, the coaching staff and the manager that they managed to win the title.

"But hopefully I've now got my own experience to look forward to. However, there's still a lot of hard work to be done because nothing is done yet."

Much of the focus surrounding Rangers has been on their Scottish Cup semi-final clash with Celtic on April 17, and Holt would like to have promotion wrapped up by the time the Glasgow giants rekindle their rivalry.

"The quicker you win a league the better to be honest but nothing is done and we just need to keep working hard to try and get to our aim which is promotion.

"But that isn't done yet so we'll keep fighting and keep going strong until we reach our objective."
