Premiership Dundee, Hamilton and Partick were all dumped out of the Scottish League Cup by lower league opposition in a night of high drama at the second round stage.

League One Dunfermline take pride of place with their 3-1 win over Dundee while Hamilton lost 2-1 at Championship Raith Rovers and Partick slipped up against Falkirk, losing 1-0 at Firhill.

Elsewhere Hearts and Motherwell needed extra time to avoid joining the top flight casualties, battling through against Forfar and East Fife respectively.

Faissal El Bakhtaoui's 10th goal of the season put Dunfermline 1-0 ahead against Dundee in the 11th minute but former Barnsley striker Kane Hemmings (48) levelled for the Premiership side.

The Championship side were not to be denied and Joe Cardle (86) netted before El Bakhtaoui grabbed his second of the night to seal a fine 3-1 win.

Raith Rovers made a bright start against Hamilton, Iain Davidson putting them ahead in the third minute but Christian Nade (66) equalised. Kyle Benedictus then struck with nine minutes remaining to seal a memorable night for Rovers.

Peter Grant (32) scored the only goal of the game at Firhill to end Partick's interest in the competition and book the Bairns' ticket to round three.

Nathan Austin put League Two East Fife in front against out-of-sorts Motherwell at New Bayview with a shot from the edge of the area but Louis Molt (80) levelled, beating Ryan Goodfellow from 18 yards.

But extra time strikes from substitute Scott McDonald and Lionel Ainsworth took Motherwell into Thursday's third round draw.

Kevin McHattie (74) eased Hearts nerves with the first goal of the game at Forfar but Michael Dunlop (84) equalised to take the game into an extra 30 minutes. Callum Paterson was the man to step up seal the win for the Premiership pacesetters after 105 minutes.

Liam Boyce (3) put Ross County ahead against Ayr United in Dingwall before some of the home support had taken their seats.

Boyce, who had claimed a brace in the 4-0 win at Kilmarnock at the weekend, fired in from 10 yards and Michael Gardyne scored early in the second half to wrap up a comfortable 2-0 win.

Kris Boyd helped put some pep in beleaguered Kilmarnock's step as his penalty - his second goal for the club since his return in the summer - put them ahead against League Two Berwick Rangers.

League Two Rangers levelled through Darren Lavery (55) before Rory McKenzie (70) and Craig Slater (77) made the game safe, Kallum Higginbotham adding a late strike to make it 4-1.

There was no shortage of goals in Paisley where St Mirren went ahead against Livingston through Calum Gallagher (16) but Liam Buchanan (41) equalised with his first goal for his new club since his move from Alloa.

Dan Mullen put the visitors in front in the 45th minute but Stephen Mallan levelled in the third minute of added time before the break. But Declan Gallagher claimed the winner for Livi six minutes from time, although Mullen saw red in injury time.

Ross Forbes' 69th minute goal was enough to see Morton home against Queen of the South.
