Strong stuff from Arsene Wenger as he warns the Premier League to wake up and smell the coffee.

It wasn't quite a glorious failure but there was certainly something valiant about the manner in which Arsenal defied the odds and more than a few merchants of doom in winning at Bayern Munich in midweek, even if ultimately it wasn't enough to secure progression. The away goals ruled ensured there will be no British interest in the quarter finals of the Champions League for the first time since 1996 but post-match Wenger was in no mood to talk of ill-fortune. Instead the Frenchman proffered his view that this term's underperformance in Europe across the board should act as a wake up call to everyone associated with the Premier League. Wenger has not been alone of late in painting a picture of English football being somewhat of a fading force, with the Bundesliga in particular seen as being stronger than it has been for many years at present.
