Gareth Southgate has called up Angus Gunn to his senior England squad for Tuesday's friendly with Brazil - but what do we know about him?

The goalkeeper is stepping in as cover for the injured Jack Butland after playing in the under-21s' 2-0 win over Ukraine on Friday.

Here's an overview of the shot-stopper's career so far…

  • Name: Angus Gunn
  • Age: 21
  • Position: Goalkeeper
  • Club: Norwich (on loan from Man City)
  • International caps: 7 U21 caps

BACKGROUND

Son of Bryan Gunn, the legendary Norwich goalkeeper who made 390 league appearances for the Carrow Road club and briefly managed them in 2009, Angus was born in Norwich and joined the youth team set-up at his hometown club before moving to Manchester City in 2011.

Highly rated as he moved through the ranks, 6ft 5in Gunn appeared to be on his way to a loan deal with a Championship club in the summer of 2016 before Pep Guardiola arrived and wanted to see the goalkeeper in action during City's pre-season tour.

Gunn played a half against both Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, saving three penalties in a shootout against the latter and Guardiola was left impressed enough to keep the player at City for the 2016/17 season.

Gunn is a capable player with the ball at his feet and suits the short passing style Guardiola likes from his goalkeepers. It's an approach the player enjoys. "Sometimes it can get a bit nervy when the opposition team comes close to our box," Gunn told ManCity.com. "But that's the sort of pressure the coaches and manager want us to be under and want us to get through because then that gives us a better chance of attacking at the other end."

After five appearances on the City bench during last season, Gunn was loaned to Norwich this summer, where he has made the first 19 appearances of his career across all competitions for the Championship side, starting all 16 of their league games.

INTERNATIONAL CAREER

Gunn's father was capped six times by Scotland but Angus, born in Norwich, has made seven appearances for England's U21s - and his first came under Southgate's management.

Gunn impressed during the September 2016 3-0 win over Norway, making three smart stops and winning praise from Southgate for his passing ability. "For a lad that has never started a league match, it was a big game for him," Southgate told the Sun afterwards.

"Those saves he made at that moment in the game were crucial. I'm really pleased for him. He's a calm lad, uses the ball well with his feet and that would have been a great experience for him and I hope it has given him a lot of confidence."

Gunn was back-up to Jordan Pickford during the summer's U21 European Championships but has become first-choice since the Everton goalkeeper's promotion to the senior ranks. He will link up with Pickford and Joe Hart - who he trained with at City - with England this week.

WHAT THEY SAY

Norwich's sporting director Stuart Webber, when Gunn joined the club on loan: "He's an unbelievably talented goalkeeper. It's a name dear to the supporters' hearts but we're judging Angus on being Angus. We're really excited to have him here."

Norwich's head coach Daniel Farke this summer: "Angus is very highly-rated and a really talented goalkeeper. He's brilliant with his feet as well as his hands and is tall too. We're happy to have him here for the next season and are thankful to Manchester City for helping us with this deal. I'm looking forward to working with such a great talent."
