Magnificent seven for Pools

Hartlepool held out to beat Carlisle 2-1 and make it a club record start to the season of seven games unbeaten.

First-half strikes from Gary Liddle and Adam Boyd put Pools in control before a Rory Loy penalty gave hope to Carlisle, only for them to miss a number of chances to equalise. Hartlepool had to survive an early blitz as Francois Zoko's first-time effort rebounded off the underside of the bar. It was typical of the Cumbrians' luck in front of goal when Lee Miller, falling backwards, spooned his shot over the bar from just three yards. Liddle drove home Pools' opener midway through the first half after Nolberto Solano's initial effort had been blocked on the line. Their second was a stunning individual effort by Boyd, who brought the ball down 20 yards from goal and hit a right foot blockbuster which left keeper Adam Collin clutching thin air as it flew in at the keeper's right-hand post. Ex-Carlisle player Paul Murray then fouled Loy who picked himself up to slot a 74th-minute penalty low to the right of goalkeeper Scott Flinders.
