Joel Ekstrand released by Watford, who give new deal to Alex Jakubiak

Watford have confirmed defender Joel Ekstrand will leave the club at the end of his contract this summer.

Ekstrand, who arrived at Vicarage Road from Udinese in 2013, made 100 appearances and scored two goals during his time in England.

But the last year of his stay was wrecked by a serious knee ligament injury, with his last senior appearance having come in March 2015 when Watford were still a Sky Bet Championship club.

The 27-year-old, who has two Sweden caps, told Watford's website: "I have some amazing memories from my time at Watford and some big highlights, like the Leicester semi-final at home during my first year, which was unbelievable, and then of course the promotion last season.

"I'm sad to be leaving in this manner, without having played any games for a while, but I hope some of you remember that I gave my all for the club, and I hope to see you again some day."

"My next step is still not 100 per cent decided. I hope to join a club that believes in me and where I can play and get going again - that's the most important thing for me right now."
