Carlos Carvalhal praised Sheffield Wednesday's performance after his side became the first club to beat Huddersfield at the John Smith's Stadium this season.
A Fernando Forestieri penalty was enough to hand Wednesday all three points in a hard-fought 1-0 win on Sunday.
Victory moves Carvalhal's side up to seventh in the Sky Bet Championship table, while they also denied fellow Yorkshire club Huddersfield the opportunity to return to the top.
"When we play at the home of a team that are doing really well, where they've won all their games [this season], we can't say this is a normal win," said Carvalhal.
"We know why we won. We were doing well in the last six or seven games even if we lost one or two.
"My players discovered the soul of the team. We are playing compact and we understand what we must do because we know the competition.
"We studied Huddersfield, the dynamic that they have and we blocked them very well.
"My players were fantastic, great teamwork and this is the way to the future."
Although Huddersfield enjoyed more of the ball, it was Wednesday who created the greater number of clear-cut chances.
The visitors hit the woodwork twice, with Forestieri going close with a superb dink over the 'keeper which hit the post.
"With this win we have more confidence. I'm so happy for the players," said Forestieri.
"We are lucky but I was unlucky before when I hit the post in a one-on-one and then I took my second chance.
"But it is important that we won, and that's more important than anything."
Meanwhile, Huddersfield boss David Wagner had no complaints after they were unable to break down a stubborn Owls defence.
"It's a disappointing result but I don't have any complaints about the performance, the effort, the attitude, the fighting attitude," said Wagner.
"If two strong sides play against each other then it's even - it's tight like it was today.
"One situation decided the game and unfortunately it was a situation for Sheffield Wednesday.
"I can accept this result because we performed good - not outstanding but good. This is Sheffield Wednesday, one of the top teams in this division, and we are able to be competitive against them."
