Pool face Gilks struggle

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway admits he faces a battle to convince goalkeeper Matthew Gilks to stay at the club.

In-demand keeper's contract expires next summer

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway admits he faces a battle to convince goalkeeper Matthew Gilks to stay at the club. Gilks, who has recently earned a call-up to the Scotland international side, is believed to be mulling over an offer of a three-year extension to remain at Bloomfield Road. The 28-year-old's contract expires next summer and a string of impressive displays during Blackpool's equally fine start to their debut campaign has a number of Premier League clubs on red alert. Boss Holloway is aware he could lose his first-choice stopper for nothing if he fails to tie up his future by January, when the former Rochdale keeper becomes free to speak to other clubs.

Nail him down

"Matt is out of contract next summer and at the moment that is something he wants to be," Holloway told the Daily Mail. "If I can't nail him down I'll have to find someone else and I've got until January to convince him to stay, because he can sign a pre-contract somewhere else in January." Blackpool's haul of 10 points in their opening seven games has drawn attention to their new-found stars and Holloway concedes Gilks could find a better wage elsewhere in the Premier League. He added: "Matt probably feels a bit aggrieved with how much he is on. "What he is trying to do is play himself into a better position in his life, so he commands more respect and better wages."
