Sadio Mane says he was expecting only to be booked for the challenge on Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson which saw him sent off.

Mane was shown a straight red card by referee Jon Moss after his high boot caught Ederson in the face towards the end of the first half on Saturday, with the Brazilian having to be replaced by Claudio Bravo.

Liverpool failed with an appeal to have Mane's suspension overturned on Tuesday, meaning the winger will sit out the next three domestic fixtures.

He was in the Reds side which drew 2-2 with Sevilla in the Champions League in midweek, and afterwards spoke of his surprise at being dismissed in the City game.

"Honestly, I was focusing more on the goalkeeper than the card and when I saw the red card I was surprised because I was expecting a yellow card," he said.

"But I'll accept it and try to forget it. I was going for the ball and I didn't have the intention to hurt him because I'm not that kind of player. I wish him a quick recovery.

He was able to return to the City bench in the second half, and trained - wearing protective head gear - on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday's Champions League match at Feyenoord.
