Steven Fletcher has signed for Sheffield Wednesday on a four-year contract following his release by Sunderland.

Fletcher, 29, cost the Black Cats £12m when he arrived from Wolves in 2012 and scored 23 goals in 108 appearances for the club.

However, he fell out of favour last season and spent the latter half of the campaign on loan at Marseille in Ligue 1, registering two goals in 12 league appearances.

Scotland international Fletcher had also been a target for Norwich but the Owls have won the race for his signature.

A club statement read: "Sheffield Wednesday have signed international striker Steven Fletcher.

"The Scotland star, who has totalled transfer fees of £15m, joins the Owls on a free and has put pen to paper on a four-year contract."

Carlos Carvalhal's side ended last season by losing the play-off final against Hull City at Wembley in May and will hope Fletcher can fire them to another promotion challenge.

Fletcher has 28 senior international caps and is one of only five players to have scored three hat-tricks for Scotland.
